The Gathering: 2012 Concert Series Debut at Triad Stage

After the 2011 premiere with the NC Symphony and a series of December shows, “The Gathering” returns with a holiday concert as lively and eclectic as any good family gathering, from high-energy hoedowns to heartfelt remembrances of home.

The string-band quintet features Laurelyn Dossett, Rhiannon Giddens, Mike Compton, Joe Newberry, and Jason Sypher performing the original song cycle, “The Gathering: A Winter’s Tale in Six Songs,” as well as a warm mix of Joe Newberry originals and Appalachian traditional songs.

Carolina Chocolate Drops: Leaving Eden

Every once in a while something pops up in my email or Facebook news feed about Carolina Chocolate Drops’ new record, “Leaving Eden.” A certain kind of chill happens any time I get to hear another performer play one of my songs. But when that song also makes the final cut of a record, and then becomes the title track of that record? There are no words.

I’ll just let this little video do the talking.

Of all the things I’ve seen and read about the new record, this, I have to say, is my favorite: a live, intimate session inside an old church space, Esplanade Studios, in New Orleans.
